Abstract

This study focused on local communities' perceptions of biodiversity conservation in the Lomako-Yokokala Wildlife Reserve. The aim of the study was to identify local communities' perceptions of biodiversity, assess its conservation and evaluate their role in implementing effective conservation policies. The fieldwork took place between October 2022 and November 2023. Data was collected using the observation method, supported by documentary research, sampling and questionnaire survey techniques. The results show that local communities have an in-depth knowledge of their region's biodiversity and its value. The main challenges faced by local communities in their conservation efforts are : poverty 35.8%, monolithic management 27.5%, non-recognition of local community rights (cahier de charges) 20% and boundary violations 16.6%. Concerning the factors influencing the local communities' decision not to participate in the conservation project. The results obtained reveal a lack of opportunities (55.8%), a lack of information (23.3%) and poor relations with reserve staff (20.8%). 59,1%. Local communities suggested the construction of infrastructure, 22.5% the creation of development projects and 18.3% the authorisation of hunting.
